This club saw it’s beginning in 1992, when under the guidance of Rev. Gord Simons several interested collectors gathered informally to socialize and exchange info. The First formal meeting of the Club was however conducted on February 16th, 1993. The Club membership encompasses the Tri-Counties (Yarmouth, Shelburne & Queens, Nova Scotia) but is based in Barrington Passage, with meetings held at Barrington Municipal Library on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm. With the exception of July and August.
Over the years, Club members have tried to make the public more aware of their hobby by presenting displays and doing free appraisals at the Shelburne Mall, Shelburne Exhibition, Barrington Exhibition, both Yarmouth Malls, Youth Fairs at the Shelburne Fire Hall, Antique Roadshow at Founder's Day in Shelburne, Lobsterfest, Superstore, Cape Sable Causeway 50th Anniversary, etc. Members have also given talks at Hillcrest Academy, Evelyn Richardson Elementary School, Maple Grove School and the Barrington Library.
From the beginning, the Club became a member of the Canadian Numismatic Association and the Atlantic Provinces Numismatic Association; attending rallies and shows and winning many medals for coin displays. In May 2001, one of our most active members, Doug Shand became President of the APNA, a position which he held for two consecutive terms. |
The Club has hosted three APNA Shows, which attracted dealers and collectors from all over the Maritime, as well as the general public. The first one was held at the Bridgewater Mall in October of 1998. This was a new venue for APNA shows and proved to be very successful. The second show hosted by the Sou'wester Coin Club was held at the Grand Hotel, in Yarmouth N.S. October 2001, and also received good reviews from dealers, collectors and those seeking appraisals. Due to the huge success their third show once again saw the members back at the Bridgewater Mall in Oct. of 2003. And this event equaled if not surpass their first.
In the early years, the Club produced several commemorative "wooden nickels" with the Club logo on one side and the event & date on the reverse. They progressed to having commemorative medal sets struck in 1997 (Lobster Capital Of Canada), 1998 (Cape Island boat), 1999 (Cape Sable Island Causeway) and 2001 (Cape Forchu light house). For the last three sets, sketches by local artist, John Smith were used for the reverse side. In 2003 the club struck a medal to celebrate their 10th anniversary, which was followed in 2004 by an issue of scrip to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Acadians. Although the club has experienced a lull in recent years the membership continues to hold regular monthly meeting and they are always eager to participate in promoting the hobby, and involvement in the APNA.
